Project Long-span Structure Exercise thumbnail

The objective of this project was to design a structural system capable of spanning 25 feet without failure. The project was organized into two separate teams: one responsible for the design development and the production of construction documents, which I was a part of, and a second team responsible for executing the physical construction of the structure.

As members of the design and documentation team, our primary responsibility was to translate the structural concept into clear, precise, and buildable instructions. This required a high level of attention to detail in describing materials, connections, dimensions, and the sequence of construction. Clear communication was essential, as the construction team relied entirely on our drawings and written instructions to assemble the structure. The success of the final build demonstrated the effectiveness of our documentation and the importance of accurate collaboration between the design and construction teams.

Attention to Detail

Throughout this project, our team worked meticulously to document every component, detail, and step of the process to make construction as clear and efficient as possible for the next team. We intentionally limited the number of different materials used and selected materials that were easy to source and readily available, ensuring that the design was both practical and buildable.

Construction

When the construction documents were handed off to the construction team, we remained actively involved to ensure that each step was clearly understood and correctly followed. We addressed questions and concerns as they arose and provided guidance and support whenever needed. This close collaboration helped ensure that the structure was built according to our specifications and resulted in an outcome that accurately reflected our original design vision.
